SUMMARY:Winter Solstice Celebration
DESCRIPTION:As per Britannica Encyclopedia\, Winter Solstice (or December Solstice for people in the south) marks the moment during the year when the path of the Sun in the sky is farthest south in the Northern Hemisphere. At the winter solstice\, the Sun travels the shortest path through the sky\, and that day therefore has the least daylight and the longest night. \n\n\n\nIn India\, it is also known as “Dakshin Aayan”. \n\n\n\nA tentative celebration program has been organized for club members.

SUMMARY:Geminids Meteor Shower
DESCRIPTION:The Perseid Meteor Shower in August is typically considered the most spectacular meteor shower of the year. However\, it coincides with the peak of the monsoon season\, which is unfortunate for us. As a result\, we aim for the second-best option: the Geminid Meteor Shower. \n\n\n\nLuckily\, this year\, it’s a moonless night which means all the more excuse to do a full night incursion away from city lights.

SUMMARY:Leonid meteor shower
DESCRIPTION:The Leonid Meteor Shower is an annual meteor shower that occurs when the Earth passes through the debris left behind by the comet 55P/Tempel-Tuttle. This shower gets its name from the constellation Leo\, as the meteors appear to radiate from that area of the sky. The Leonid Meteor Shower is known for producing some of the most spectacular meteor displays in history\, with “meteor storms” happening at irregular intervals. \n\n\n\nThe peak of the Leonid Meteor Shower typically occurs in mid-November\, around November 17-18 each year. During the peak\, observers can expect to see a higher number of meteors per hour\, sometimes reaching hundreds or even thousands of meteors in an hour during a meteor storm. \n\n\n\nOn 17th November this year\, the Moon will set around 09:30 PM which means we will get a clear\, moonless sky for the rest of the night. Leo rises after midnight and we should be able to see a good number of meteors around the night. \n\n\n\nPlus\, this event also falls right during the Diwali holidays.

SUMMARY:Certificate Course in Basic Astronomy
DESCRIPTION:It’s that time of year when the monsoon clouds\, especially in Gujarat\, India\, are receding and one gets relief from that itch of once again looking at the night sky after long but necessary months of monsoon. \n\n\n\nNow that the sky is clearing\, we bring to you a weekend certificate course in Basic Astronomy under the mentorship of world-renowned Indian astrophysicist\, Dr J. J. Rawal. \n\n\n\nWhile Dr J. J. Rawal needs no introduction\, we will keep it in brief. He is the former director of Nehru Planetarium\, Mumbai and currently heads the Indian Planetary Society. During the 70s and 80s\, he studied and published research papers on the formation of our Solar System predicting rings around the Sun\, Mars and Neptune. The latter of which was proved to be corrected when NASA’s Voyager 2 definitively discovered them in the images during its fly-by near Neptune. \n\n\n\nComing back to the course\, the mode of teaching is offline and you’ll have to visit Shri O. V. Sheth Regional Community Science Centre\, Rajkot to attend the classes. Luckily\, the classes will be only at weekends and so you can drop by even if you are staying in a nearby city. There will be 18 sessions with 3 sessions each weekend (Saturday evening\, Sunday morning & afternoon). The first session will be on the evening 9th of October 2021. \n\n\n\nThe fee for the course is Rs. 1\,500/- (non-refundable) and a certificate will be issued on successful completion of the full course. \n\n\n\nSpot registrations are also accepted. \n\n\n\nFor more details\, please refer to the attached PDF. \n\n\n\n2110-bbac-astronomy-certificate-course-brochureDownload
