Leonid meteor shower
November 17, 2023 @ 10:30 pm – November 18, 2023 @ 12:30 pm
The Leonid Meteor Shower is an annual meteor shower that occurs when the Earth passes through the debris left behind by the comet 55P/Tempel-Tuttle. This shower gets its name from the constellation Leo, as the meteors appear to radiate from that area of the sky. The Leonid Meteor Shower is known for producing some of the most spectacular meteor displays in history, with “meteor storms” happening at irregular intervals.
The peak of the Leonid Meteor Shower typically occurs in mid-November, around November 17-18 each year. During the peak, observers can expect to see a higher number of meteors per hour, sometimes reaching hundreds or even thousands of meteors in an hour during a meteor storm.
On 17th November this year, the Moon will set around 09:30 PM which means we will get a clear, moonless sky for the rest of the night. Leo rises after midnight and we should be able to see a good number of meteors around the night.
Plus, this event also falls right during the Diwali holidays.
